“If you get a
bad review, you take that in your stride.”
Anish Kapoor
This is something really good to
learn from, for both architecture and life. To be resilient about your work and
showing the world your talent doesn't stop there, it will continuously improve.
I was fascinated of my recent
visit to London, the Arcelomittal Orbit standing at the heart of London
symbolizing the capital with its bright red colour. Anish Kapoor isn’t
technically an architect but he is my inspiration, implementing twisting steel
as the base structure of the exhibition allowing him to demonstrate his
innovative ideas into the architectural field.
The inspiration was gathered from The Tower Of Babel and the purpose was to create an 'Eiffel Tower' of London. Anish believed shapes shouldn't always be the same, so he brought up the idea of creating a structure off centre with irregular shaping.
This is a functional building which serves a
purpose of introducing the view of London to tourists around the world.
I really like this structure
because of its symbolism; the red represents London since they are famous for
their red Double Decker bus and red post boxes and also red telephone boxes,
and is also a very special colour to Kapoor. He was able to present his
interest and beliefs through his working to the world. The work will be
appreciated for generations and passed down in history, this is an achievement
I want for my career.
An experience I look forward to design structures with informal shapes and also simultaneously think about sustainability to help the environment.
Studying at
MSA would allow me to achieve this goal because of the rich facilities
available for students. I want to learn about the various architects that stand
out for their work in the Manchester school of Architecture. I want to improve
my communication skills as that’s one of the skills required for an architect’s
profession. MSA will allow me to develop my drawing and sketching skills, and
will allow me to magnify my skills using computer programs. Manchester being my
hometown will gives me territorial advantages to do researches and carry out
projects because I am more adapted to the area. Manchester is a great area with
many inspirational structures to develop ideas from therefore I think it would
be the most appropriate and best choice for me.
Pencil sketch of a
curved building The first building I have drawn shows a unique style due to its structure in comparison to other buildings. The curved exterior creates an irregular shape that allows it to stand out from other buildings.
The glass-like walls give an air of sophistication to it and the balconies also lend it a sense of friendliness, as though the building is extending itself. The complex 3-D structure shows the amount the thought required of the architect to ensure the building itself is functional and safe as well as looking modern and stylistic.
Pencil drawing of
Symphony Residence
The shape of this building is very fascinating due to it been built on three different levels, the blocked structure used is very modern and elegant.
The picture was taking at an angle, bringing both light and shade to the picture. This made it more interesting to draw as it meant I could demonstrate my tonal skills.
Virtual
Design Building in pencil
I chose this building because of its asymmetrical shapes and round wall. Not only does it look pleasant but also serves a functional purpose such as reflecting off strong wind to minimise damage.
I chose to do this in pencil in order to depict the different tones and contrasts of the different sectors of the building.
An Old School Pencil drawing
This reflects a purpose of an architect as
one who is able to reconstruct buildings making them more appealing or simple
renovations to update the building. This drawing shows my ability and skills in
replicating different forms of architecture.
Pencil sketch of Haxi New District Offices
The extreme shape of this building shows its uniqueness and new ideas and developments within architecture. The pencil enabled me to show the contrast between dark and light.
Pencil drawing of a Slanted Building
I chose this building because of its fascinating shape. The reflective walls and windows allow light to produce beautiful images on the building. It’s slanted shape illustrates its distinctive construction.

Using charcoal enabled
me to emphasise hidden areas as well as illustrating the difference in
contrast. The main focal point of the building is exhibited by darkening the
area around and beneath it.
Water ink drawing |
Using ink and water
allows me to create a smooth texture of the drawing for buildings that use
other materials such as concrete rather than individual bricks.
Pencil drawing of Stairway
These are one of the
few sets of
stairs in my new apartment in China; I believe that the interior is
as important as the exterior of a building and is vital for an architect when
it comes to designing new buildings or reconstructing old ones.
3D Model Sculpture
This was part of my AS art project, creating a sculpture of ‘Simplicity of Forms’.I like irregularity and so I created an arch shaped model using wire in the centre.
3D Model Structure
This compilation of similar shapes stacked together to represent a particular structure. I added a slit at the base which allows the structure to stand up at an angle similar to The Tower of Pisa.
These pictures are taken when I went to Macau and China. Architectural culture differs even for a different area of a country
